As we shift from the PSSA measurement to the Keystone exams, the state is providing greater support for instruction in as related to standards and evaluation.
As of now, the Keystone Exams will work as follows:
By 2017, students must successfully pass 6 of the 10 Keystone exams, which include Civics/Government, US History, and World History. 1 of the 6 must be in either of the 3 social studies exams.
The test does not have to be taken in conjunction with a course.
This maybe substituted by a "local assessment" which still must be independently validated or a national assessment exam approved by PDE.
A student may take the Keystone Exam as a final, but it must count as 33% of the course grade. If the local assessment option is taken, then weight is up to the individual district. PDE has stated that the test score alone cannot be the basis for failure of the course (denial of a diploma).
A district may allow students to "test out" of courses.
A student may begin taking tests in middle school.
A student who does not achieve proficiency after 2 attempts may choose a project-based assessment.
Go to the SAS site, and look at the standards and materials in the course you are teaching. What do you think? Would you likely use this site?
Now check out the Algebra I standards. Look at what it can become as a resource tool. Better? Worse?
Assignment for next class:
Create an account and use the teacher tools to make a basic web page.
Find a site that is or was useful to you (in this course or for other purposes). Add it to your bookmarks.
Create a folder within your ePortfolio site and entitle it IT1161. You can use this folder for all document assignments for this course.
Set up an bio page that gives teacher-focused information about you (education, employment, organizational memberships, hobbies or interests)
Create a current events page with an introduction and table that includes at least 2 news sites
Organize your pages that suits the order in what you wish to present
When you have completed the web page, email the link of your page to brm@pitt.edu
